For best practice, be sure to use a burner to start the charcoal on fire or light it with a long match or lighter. Using tongs or by one edge, hold the charcoal and light one side of it. Allow the charcoal to burn for ten to fifteen minutes, or until it warms up and any remaining lighter fluid burns out. A white or ashy color indicates that the charcoal is ready to be used. Possibly another ten to fifteen minutes.
